A sample of the tar-like substance that was found covering a 5-kilometer stretch of Bang Ma Phrao Beach in Chumphon's Lang Suan district has been sent to a related agency for examination.
Lang Suan district chief Chumpol Suksai inspected the affected area as tambon Bang Ma Phrao officials and residents were collecting the tar-like substance for the officials’ examination and cleaning the beach yesterday. A villager, who asked not to be named, said an oil-drilling rig had been set up slightly off shore several months ago and the tar had been swept on shore since Monday.
Residents were warned not to expose themselves to the tar-like substance.
Chumphon Marine Office Director Chaisiri Khundam and team also inspected the scene and collected samples for tests to determine its origin and punish wrongdoers.
In related news, people living near the beach in Lamae, Thung Tako and Sawi districts also reported the presence of similar tar-like substance in their neighbourhood.
