Security tightened in South ahead of M'sian Independence Day

Security has been beefed up in the deep South after photos were found of alleged insurgents plotting attacks. Pattani Governor Wittaya Panitchapong yesterday ordered the tightening up ahead of August 31, which marks Malaysia's independence from British rule and commemorates the founding of umbrella separatist organisation Bersatu.

Conceding that insurgents may be seeking ways to retaliate to a heavy crackdown by Thai security officials, Wittaya said he had instructed 12 district chiefs to beef up security to prevent attacks.

Wittaya also revealed that Thai authorities had discovered photos and information about insurgents - including prominent figure Masae Useng - and sympathisers in the region and in Malaysia's Kelantan state plotting further attacks.
