Security tightened ahead of PM's visit following terrorism reports

Security in the northern province of Chiang Mai has been beefed up following reports of possible terrorism activities but the US Consulate General in there has not yet asked for more security, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Tuesday.

Yingluck, who is scheduled to travel to the province on Friday said she is not worried, as security authorities had already taken extra safety measures.

On Tuesday, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung claimed he’d had a "sniff" of terrorism-related activities in Chiang Mai.

He said police in the region had already been assigned to reinforce security at the US Consulate General in the province.
