Thais in Narathiwat's Rusoh district have agreed to build a memorial in memory of Pol Lt Col Jakkrit Wongphrommes, who was killed in an insurgent attack last week.

The initiative comes from about 6,500 local residents of Rusoh district, both Buddhists and Muslims, who met to discuss Jakkrit's death.

Supak Pipitwattanapan, who participated in the meeting, said the officer had done a lot for the safety of people during his time in the district and he had now sacrificed his life for them.

"We loved and respected Khun Jakkrit very much, as he worked hard to provide safety for us. The meeting agreed that a memorial, possibly his statue, should be built to reflect his sacrifices for our province," he said.

The statue could be erected at clock tower in the district.

Jakkrit, 49, and two others were killed in a roadside explosion in Rusoh district on Friday. The powerful bomb, consisting of 90 kilograms of explosives, left a threemetrewide, twometredeep crater in the bridge where it was planted and sent the officers' vehicle flying for several metres. The six occupants were travelling in their jurisdiction on administrative duty.

Two others killed were Pol Sgt Piya Pupunwer, 30 and Pol Sgt Suwes Chantarangsri, both 30.

Meanwhile Tapanee Khiriwong, Jakkri's wife, said she felt honoured that the villagers would erect a statue in honour of her late husband.

"Khun Jakkrit would be very happy and honoured if he knew of the move," she said.

Jakkrit, a native of Chiang Mai province, was a much-decorated officer and took p the position of deputy police chief in April last year. He volunteered to work in the south.
