A police officer was seriously injured yesterday morning by what could have either been an accidental gunshot or a suicide attempt.

Pol Snr Sgt-Major Ekkapol Somkongkaew, 43, was taken to Lampang Centre Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to his chest at 10.30am. He was in a police pickup truck outside the Ban Eium police booth on Lampang-Huai Peng Road in Muang district when the shooting occurred.
As of press time, he was under intensive care pending surgery.
Initial investigation showed that Ekkapol had reportedly called fellow officer, Pol Sub-Lieutenant Boonthan Tipsribut, for help. A police officer later found Ekkapol in a pool of blood inside the truck and a 9mm pistol next to him.
Though police initially suspected that this might have been an accident because Ekkapol liked to play with his gun, they have not totally ruled out an attempted suicide.
Ekkapol was among the officers chosen to join crowd-control operations in the capital from tomorrow onward.
