New medical centres open in Yala

A new small-sized medical training centre was inaugurated in Yala province yesterday.

It will be a site where local medical students can do apprenticeships under a cooperative deal between the Public Health Ministry and Prince of Songkla University's faculty of medicine.

The Clinical Medicine Centre will operate under the supervision of Yala General Hospital and give advanced training and apprentices in a six-year course for 30 medical students based in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat each year. Graduates will be committed to a contract to serve in the strife-torn far South.

Medical students in years 1-3 will study at the university, and those in years 4-6 at this Bt108-million centre. A similar centre was established nine years ago under the supervision of Pattani General Hospital, and it has produced 221 medical graduates to serve in the far South.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn yesterday presided over the centre's inauguration ceremony, after she opened a new hospital in Yala's Krong Pinang district, which began servicing local people yesterday. The Bt73-million 30-bed community hospital will serve 28,052 residents in this and other districts.
