The National Health Security Office is pushing for a special fund to provide long-term care for the elderly as well as people with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

NHSO deputy secretary-general Prateep Dhanakijcharoen said he expected this fund to give birth to day-care centres or home-based care services for all the above target groups.
“Once the fund is established, such services should become available within three years,” he said yesterday.
He said the NHSO would present this idea to the National Council for Peace and Order as Thailand needs to prepare for its transition into an ageing society. Prateep said both the central government and local administrative bodies should contribute to this fund.
“People may also be asked to contribute for their retirement via the fund,” he explained, adding that this fund would be different from the existing old-age pension fund.
