NHRC offers protect rights of people living near Praksa dumpsite

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is reaching out to protect the rights of people living near the Praksa dumpsite, which caught fire and spread toxic smoke for several days last month.

"We've come here to listen to people's problems. With the information, we will engage relevant authorities in finding solutions," NHRC member Niran Pitakwatchara said yesterday, as he led a team of officials to the homes of people near the dumpsite in Samut Prakan's Mueang district.

The dumpsite caught fire on March 16 and several districts nearby were covered in toxic fumes for a few days. It is widely suspected that industrial waste might have been illegally dumped at the site.

Niran said the NHRC would also speak to Samut Prakan governor and local administrative bodies.

"We will focus on policies that will ensure the proper disposal of waste, especially industrial waste," he said, adding that NHRC would also monitor progress made in efforts to solve the Praksa dumpsite problem.
