The Department of Corrections has been using electronic monitoring bracelets on 39 convicts, with the first offender having completed his seven-day probation yesterday.
“He is a convicted drunk driver,” the department’s director general Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol said.
She said offenders wearing the bracelets were convicts on probation, temporarily released from prison or undergoing drug-rehabilitation programmes.
Ruenvadee added that the convicts were happy to wear the monitoring bracelets, which is now in a pivotal phase, because they could spend time with their families.
The department has 200 of the bracelets and plans to use them in Bangkok and adjacent provinces first. It will seek bids later this year for the procurement of 3,000 more such bracelets.
“We will then use these devices in 19 other provinces,” she said.
