The Thai Broadcast Journalists Association has called on a mining company to review its plan to sue a teenager for allegedly defaming it over the alleged negative impact of its gold mine on a community in Loei.

The comment was broadcast on public broadcaster Thai PBS in September during its “Citizen News” programme.
Thung Kham Co Ltd is suing Thai PBS and its executives and is seeking permission from the Loei Juvenile Observation and Protection Centre to take legal action against the 15-year-old secondary school girl, who lives in Wang Saphung district.
At a meeting on Friday, the TBJA executive board expressed its concern over the case and urged the company to review its decision to sue the schoolgirl, the association’s president Thepchai Yong said yesterday.
He said the girl expressed her view innocently for the benefit of her community.
Thepchai said that if her comment was inaccurate, the company should provide its explanation to the public rather than take legal action against the schoolgirl.
