Man shot dead, insurgents ambush authorities with bomb
Insurgents shot dead a Yala villager on Thursday night before ambushing the authorities inspecting the scene with a roadside bomb.
Fortunately, no one was injured when the bomb was detonated in Uber village in Tambon Bacho of Yala's Bannang Sata district.
Police said 20 troops, police and Interior Ministry officials rushed to the scene after they were informed at 8.15pm that a villager has been gunned down. He was identified as Rosalee Toni, 28, a former sailor with the Navy.
They were travelling in nine vehicles. About two kilometres before they reached the scene, an unknown number of insurgents detonated the roadside bomb.
Police said the insurgents also fired at the vehicles and both sides exchanged gunfire before the insurgents retreated.
The officials retreated following the ambush.
The Yala Police head office dispatched its bomb squad officers to check the explosion scene at 8am Friday. Yala Police chief Pol Maj Gen Pira Boonliang travelled with the bomb squad officers. The officers found that the insurgents had tied a home-made bomb weighing about 5 kgs to an electric pole.
The bomb toppled the pole, causing a blackout in nearby Uber village.
