Kui Buri Park chief transferred

Suriyon Bhothibandit, the head of Kui Buri National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan, has been transferred to oversee Huai Yang Waterfall National Park.

Meanwhile Prawatsart Chanthep, the head of Huai Yang in the same province, will replace Suriyon at Kui Buri, a senior official said yesterday.

Acting chief of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department (NWPCD) Nipon Chotibal said the swap was done so each side felt comfortable, as park work also required cooperation from local villagers.

Some villagers had opposed Suriyon's appointment, citing his alleged link to the death of elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park in 2012. Meanwhile, a probe into the mysterious death of 24 gaurs at Kui Buri is ongoing and the park closed to tourists.

Nipon's deputy Theerapat Prayurasiddhi said officials had spotted a herd of 25 gaur on Monday morning and another herd of 60 in the afternoon at Kui Buri. Officials would continue to monitor the gaur for any suspicion of illness for an undefined period and the park would remain closed during this time, he said.
