A lion dance was performed at Chinatown, Yaowarat, while a number of vegetarians showed up and shopped food items.
Despite rain, the Je Festival in Phuket kicks off in a grand scale. The provincial's tourism office expected the influx of Thai and foreign visitors - mostly from Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore - to the island during the vegetarian festival would generate at least Bt600 million in revenue.
Phuket hotels are fully booked in the last four days of the festival.
The number of vegetarians in Buri Ram is reportedly 20 per cent higher than last year, as people are more health-conscious.
Vegetarians in Lamphun don white clothes, as a vow to maintain the purity of mind during the period.
Thongluan Nanthasaen, a food vendor in Kalasin, said that cooked Je food price is raised from last year due to the higher prices of vegetables. From Bt20-Bt25, a pack of food is sold at Bt25-Bt30.
