Four waste-water pipe cleaners die

Four workers were found dead yesterday after inhaling hydrogen sulphide while cleaning a waster-water management system's pool on Sri Sena Road, police said.

The Eastern Thai Consulting 1992 Co's workers - Sanan Buachum, Thawat Chitchonthan, Suchet Chitchonthan and Abhisit Tipprasong - were found dead at around 10am inside the pool's meter-wide pipe, which is three metres underground, amid the stink of hydrogen sulphide, Pol Captain Udon Phetcharat of Muang Phuket precinct said.

It was difficult to retrieve the bodies from the pipe due to the gas, which made rescue worker Jessada Chanpen, 25, faint. Three other rescue workers also sought medical treatment.

Eastern Thai Consulting 1992 office manager Pimuk Sonmee said a team of six workers was sent to clean and repair the water pump and that this operation had been going on for two weeks now. He said the team had been instructed to open the pipe's lid so the gas created from the fermentation of waste can dissipate before going ahead with the work. However, he said, the workers were hit by a second wave of the gas yesterday, resulting in death.
