The Foreign and Labour ministries will meet on Friday to discuss a contingency plan in the event it becomes necessary to evacuate Thais from Libya, Iraq and Israel following fierce fighting in all three countries, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethe
The meeting will discuss evacuation plans that would involve the Air Force and THAI Airways International, Sek said.
At this point, Jordan appears to be a suitable transit point for Thais who might need to be evacuated from Iraq.
Sek said there are 1,450 Thais in Libya, 48 in Iraq and 28,000 in Israel. All of them are working and residing outside the areas of fighting. “A decision to evacuate depends on daily situation and the willingness to return of the Thais,” the spokesman added.
So far, no Thais had indicated a wish to return home as most of them have experience with the situations in the respective countries, Sek said, adding that should anyone want to return, the authorities will be ready to assist them.
