Fishermen call for full oil-spill compensation
About 100 fishermen from Rayong's Koh Samet yesterday submitted a petition to Deputy Agriculture Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart, urging the establishment of a rehabilitation fund.
Led by Jaturas Aimvoran-iran, the fisherman said they were affected by the oil leak incident in July and that, although the oil slick on Ao Phrao had been removed two months later, their lives were not yet back to normal. Jaturas said there were fewer fish to catch and fewer buyers because of safety concerns. PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC), which was responsible for the incident, should come up with full compensation for the fishermen until normal conditions return, he said.
