The Rak Doi Suthep Group objected yesterday to a cable car proposed by the Pinkanakorn Development Agency in Chiang Mai over fears the project will affect the landscape and environment.

At a press conference held at Payap University’s Sirindhorn Learning Resource Centre, group president Anuchat Thananchai submitted a letter of objection to Chiang Mai Governor Wichien Phuthiwinyu. Anuchat said the project, to cover a 10-kilometre stretch from Chiang Mai Night Safari to Doi Pui, was unnecessary and could be an insult to the city’s sacred site, Doi Suthep, because Doi Pui was higher than Doi Suthep.

The project would also claim a lot of forestland, which is also in shortage now, the letter said.
