Court urged to cancel barite mine concession

Lawyers Council of Thailand vice-president Suwit Choey-ubol along with 55 Tambon Krung Ching residents of Nakhon Si Thammarat's Noppitam district yesterday sued state agencies at the Nakhon Si Thammarat Administrative Court in a bid to get a barite mine concession cancelled. They said the mining activities would affect five villages.

Suwit, who is in charge of environmental cases, said the defendants included the provincial industry office, the Department of Primary Industries and Mines director-general, the provincial governor, the provincial health office, the Tambon Krung Ching Administrative Organisation president and the Pollution Control Department.

Besides issuing an injunction to suspend all mining, the plaintiffs requested the court cancel the concession permission that the agencies had granted to a company to mine on a 523-rai plot in Moo 8. They urged the Pollution Control Department to rehabilitate the environment, especially water sources in the affected villages.
