Assailants yesterday opened fire at a temporary police checkpoint in Tak's Phob Phra district, injuring two polocemen and damaging a police car.

The gun assault at the checkpoint at the entrance to Ban Khiri Noi in tambon Khirirat also led to a brief gunfight. Pol Sub-Lieutenant Kuan Jreuwong received one gunshot wound to the hand and Pol Snr Sgt-Major Saichon Naralert was hit on the shoulder before the assailants fled. Police suspect the gun assault was a response to the checkpoint being set up on a route often used by gangs to smuggle illegal immigrant workers or narcotics.
