Centre opened to help Thai workers leave Libya

The Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday opened a centre to aid Thai workers in Libya and said it would evacuate the first 41 nationals - including 11 students - via land transport to Tunisia as soon as possible.

The group will later board a flight to a country with direct Thai Airways International flights back to the Kingdom.

Deputy permanent secretary Natthawut Phothisaro said the centre, located at the ministry on Sri Ayudhya Road, would link to the Thai Embassy in Tripoli, would have two representatives of the Labour Ministry on hand, and would operate from 9am-9pm every day until the Libyan unrest abated.

A five-strong team of Thai officials will be dispatched to Tunis, which will serve as the main stopover for Thai workers leaving Libya, he said, adding that the Thai Embassy would relocate workers in highly restive Tripoli and Benghazi first.

Those interested in following updates on the situation can contact the centre at (02) 643-5259 or Twitter@ MFAThai.
