Cabbie gets suspended jail term for pestering tourists

Samut Prakan Court yesterday gave a two-year suspended jail term to a taxi man for creating a disturbance with tourists at Suvarnabhumi Airport and banned him from entering the airport to seek customers for five years.

The court also ordered that Somwang Pumreung, 30, wear an electronic monitoring bracelet for the first three months and report to a probation official every three months for a year.

The complaint stated that Somwang went to the airport terminal on three occasions in June and July last year to pester foreign tourists to use his service despite airport officials' warning of security measures, after he was arrested 21 times by airport police for creating a public disturbance.

The court initially gave the man eight months in jail, then halved it to four months on grounds that his confession was useful to the case.

Seeing that he was a breadwinner with two young children to raise, the court gave him a chance to turn over a new leaf by reducing the term to a suspended jail term.
