Bomb attack in Yala kills two; no casualties in Pattani bomb blast

A roadside bomb attack in Yala's Yaha district yesterday killed two policemen and wounded two others.

The explosion hit a teacher-protection team comprising four police officers on two motorbikes, resulting in the death of Pol Corporal Suchat Yangthinnang and Pol Lance Corporal Waesaaree Sapahadaloh. The injured officers were rushed to Somdet Phrayupparat Yaha Hospital.

In Bannang Sata district in the same province, a paramilitary ranger and a ranger volunteer were also shot and injured by unknown gunmen while they returning from a teacher-protection foot patrol. Lance Corporal Sunthorn Jai-ngern, 33, sustained a gunshot wound in the chest, one in the waist and one in the leg, while paramilitary ranger volunteer Noppadol Thabkrokreuk, 25, was shot in the hip.

Meanwhile, a 10-KILOGRAM roadside bomb was detonated in Pattani's Nong Chik district yesterday, aimed at an Army teacher-protection team, but nobody was injured.

Following the 9am explosion on the number 42 Pattani-Nong Chik Road in Don Rak sub-district, police went to collect bomb debris as evidence. The bomb, which caused a one-metre-wide crater, detonated at a resting area often used by teacher-protection teams - but no-one was there when it exploded.

In related news, state officials suspect a no-injury M79 grenade and shooting attack at Lam Mai Police Station in Yala's Muang district on Monday night was carried out by a group led by alleged operative insurgent Apesi Yusoh, an informed source reported yesterday.

After the precinct was shot at twice at 8.30pm, police investigators and the bomb squad inspected the scene and collected spent grenades at a rubber plantation behind the police station.

Police suspect Apesi's group - which was active in the Lam Mai area - carried out this attack, following a previous shooting at the same police station on December 19, 2011. No one was injured in that attack.
