Bangchak Petroleum has contained the fire at its refining unit in Soi Sukhumvit 64 and there were no injuries as a result of the incident. The fire broke out at 7.20am today.

The entrance to Soi Sukhumvit 64 remains closed to traffic.

Witnesses said they heard the explosion before the fire broke out. The explosion shook the area. The scene of the blast was far from living quarters so no evacuation order was issued.

The fire sent a thick column of smoke into the air that could be seen across the Thai capital.

In a statement released by the company, its president Anusorn Sangnimnuan said it was believed that the fire was caused by the ignition of the equipment in Kerosene Stripper in the third crude-distillation unit, part of the refinery complex. The unit has a daily capacity of 80,000 barrels. Damage was contained before the fire spread to other refining units. The refining unit was closed after the incident for inspection.

He said that the company has dispatched officers to monitor the situation and update communities around the refinery.

Energy Minister Arak Chonlatanon is hosting a press conference to explain this incident today, at 2pm.
