Anaesthetised gaur bull dies of illness

A 10-year-old gaur bull from Prachuap Khiri Khan's Kui Buri National Park that was shot with an anaesthetic dart on Saturday so that it could be treated for physical injuries died yesterday, reportedly from foot-and-mouth disease.

Veterinarians will conduct an autopsy and collect tissue and organ samples for lab testing to determine the exact cause of death.

The Livestock Development Department issued instructions to vaccinate livestock in the area, prohibit animal transport and disinfect park officials and vehicles before entering and leaving the park.

At least 28 gaurs at the park have died mysteriously since late last year and officials are still investigating the cause.

The discovery of two carcasses early this month prompted authorities and veterinarians to inspect the park and shoot anaesthetic darts at those that looked sick for blood samples, including the 10-year-old bull, which was found on Saturday with wounds from fighting with other bulls.
