7 schools near protest sites to close today for safety, five to shorten classes

Seven schools near Bangkok rally sites will be closed today for the sake of students' safety, while other schools nearby have decided to shorten classes so children can go home early.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced yesterday that five schools in Bangkok's Phra Nakhon district - Wat Suthat Thepwararam, Wat Ratchanadda, Wat Ratchabophit, Wat Mahannopparam and Wat Ratchaburana - and two schools in the Dusit district - Samananam Business School and Wat Benjamaborphit - would shut its doors.

Other schools near rally sites have said they would not cancel classes, but shorten them to 40 minutes instead.

Benyapha Kongrawd, director of Satriwithaya School, said yesterday that all students were present for the Mathayom 6 final exam, while Mathayom 1-5 classes had been shortened to 40 minutes each, so students could head home by 1.40pm. The school will stay open today, but parents and students have been advised to check the school's website (www.satriwit.ac.th) for announcements.

Sumonrat Assatarakul, director of Benjamarachalai School, said classes at her school would also be shortened to 40 minutes each so students can head home by 1.40pm. If there are any changes, they will be announced on the school's website (www.br.ac.th) and its Facebook page. Since the school is to hold final exams next week, it would not be feasible to cancel classes during this period, she said.
