Silk is still supreme
Nine designers and artists will scuttle the notion that Thai silk is somehow old-fashioned in the exhibition “The Queen of Thailand: The Silk and Art Design” at Paradise Park’s Royal Plaza from Wednesday through August 13.
Coinciding with Her Majesty’s birthday on August 12, the show of highly fashionable textiles and costumes will underline the Queen’s efforts in preserving and developing Thai silk.
The highlight will include innovative textile designs by Saksit Pisalsupong and Pisit Jongnarangsilp of the Tube Gallery, who adapt patterns from traditional murals and add gold plate. Kongpat Sakdapitak will show his “Cocodoc”, part dog and part crocodile, and his fellow artist Lanshakorn Chaleekrue’s takes a cue from Yayoi Kusuma’s famed polka-dot creations.
Clothing designers Jitsingha Somboon of Playhound and Pupawit Kritpholnara of Issue, Kris Yensudjai of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation and pop artists ML Jirathorn Jiraprawat and Chalit Nakpawan are also participating.

The finest crafts
Beautiful images hand-embroidered by the artisans of Her Majesty the Queen’s Support Foundation are on display at the Queen’s Gallery through November 13. The foundation helps villagers earn a sustainable living through the arts while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
Among the dozens of pieces are lovely depictions of landscapes, animals, classical motifs and the Thai way of life, including a portrait of a woman embroidering. They’re framed and ready to hang on the wall. Craftsmen will be demonstrating their techniques. Find out more at www.QueenGallery.org.
