Two wheels and a donut
Popular bike shop Velayenn moves to Thonglor and opens a coffee corner
Back in 2010, Flure's guitarist Wararat Puapairoj and four pals transformed a small garage on Sukhumvit Soi 26 into a bicycle shop and called it Velayenn, the Thai word for evening.
Recently, they relocated to subsoi Tararom 2 off Soi Thonglor and with more space - a full 60 square metres - are combining their passion for creating custom-made vintage fixed gear bicycles with a small coffee corner, where cyclists can hang out and maybe pick up a spare or two.
You can hang out both inside and out in the yard in a friendly space that's kitted out with wooden tables and chairs and seats 20.
"We want Velayenn to be more than a normal bike shop. It's a hangout too," Wararat says.
A menu board in the cafe sections offers Arabica coffee from the North and a few snacks, ranging in prices from Bt20 to Bt85. Latte goes for Bt55 but most people go for the iced Velayenn coffee, served sweet and dense in traditional Thai-style. Also popular are Italian sodas made from peppermint, kiwi, blue Mandarin, strawberry and plum for Bt50 a glass.
You can munch on seven warm donuts served with thick chocolate dip for Bt65 and toast topped with strawberry jam, condensed milk, sugar, nut, Nutella and roasted chilli paste, ranging in prices for Bt20 to Bt30.
Velayenn Bike Shop is situated at 808/15, Soi Tararom 2 off Soi Thonglor. It's open from noon to 10pm and closed on Mondays. Call (080) 900 2610 or visit www. Facebook.com/ Velayenn.shop.
