Trashed out with G-Tronic

Belgium's best electro man hits the decks at LED

Retox Sessions kicks off 2012 with the star of Belgium's electro scene, Gregory Grauwels - the spinner we know as G-Tronic - tomorrow night at their usual venue - LED.

Hailing from Antwerp, G-Tronic has created a compulsive following in the depths of the electronic scene. His bass-heavy, crunching electronic sound is widely known as Heavy Bass Trash - the unique character of his DJ style that he's honed to perfection. His original tracks can be heard in movies as "Iron Man" and "Sucker Punch", along with several hard-hitting remixes.

Warming up for G-Tronic will be two of Bangkok's brightest stars, Superzaap and JSTDAFT Crews.

On the eve of his Bangkok debut show, he had a few words to share.

What are you working on now?

I'm working on my new EP for Dim Mak Records at the moment. I still have to do some finishing touches and prepare the whole release. I hope to share this EP really soon. I'm thinking about doing an album. But at the moment I want to focus on solid EPs to mark my style and try out some new sounds I'm developing. An album is a big milestone in an artist's career. I want to do it right, and I want to develop the perfect "Gtronic-sound" first.

What kinds of music did you grow up listening to?

I grew up with a lot of rock n' roll, blues, metal, rock and a bit of punk. Everything where the guitar has an important value, I guess. I started playing the guitar around the age of six or seven.

What was your first experience of electronic music?

The compilation CDs of Dr Lektroluv, Olive Huntemann, Boys Noize, Digitalism, Justice, Booka Shade … the list goes on. These artists introduced me to the electronic music that I still love these days. Filthy and raw distortion combined with a lot of bass were the elements that intrigued me the most.

People label your sound Heavy Bass Trash. How do you like it?

That's awesome to hear! I read a lot of people were asking what genre they should label my sound to. I thought, why not marking my own stamp and label it how I feel it. Some heavy basslines, distorted guitar sounds and an overdose of bass are what the words Heavy Bass Trash stand for. These three words are the perfect keywords to explain my sound.

Of all your creations, which track are you most proud of?

That would be my latest track "Dance Machine", I think. To be honest and without being arrogant, I'm pretty proud of all originals I made so far.

Who's your dream collaborator?

The Proxy or Boys Noize - that would be amazing.

How do you like partying in Belgium?

I love Belgium for the high quality and huge festivals. It's incredible. For my style of music, I would say Fuse Club in Brussels is the best. Party hard.

Your best party so far?

That's difficult to say; I would say my first time in Sydney with Trashbags.

And the plan for Bangkok tomorrow night?

Party hard and traumatise some people with an overload of basslines.

HIT IT
