The perfect gift for your teen: a phone that will let them chat non-stop for 17 hours on a single charge
A sleek smart phone with bright and colourful screen, the Motorola Razr Maxx doesn’t really look any different from its predecessors. And that’s quite a remarkable achievement given that despite its skinny profile, the Maxx comes with a built-in 3,300 mAh battery that when fully charged, will allow to you to browse web pages for 10 hours per or watch movies non-stop on a flight from LA to Auckland. You could also talk continuously for more than 17 hours per single charge or play music for more than 60 hours. That said, the real usage time may depend on the applications running in the background.
And even though the Maxx already has a large battery, it also comes with a Smart Actions app that further helps you save battery. The application lets you set rules to extend battery life by turning off screen and GPS. For example, you can set your phone to automatically turn off its ringer when you get home from work, set it to turn off emails while you sleep, or dim the screen when battery life gets below 30 per cent.
Smart Actions also lets you set your ringer to vibrate at work, launch navigation-specific apps when you’re in the car, and launch music application when you plug in your headphone.
Although the Razr Maxx is thin, it’s tough. The case is made of DuPont KEVLAR fibre and the phone is protected with water-repellent nanocoating so it will survive water splashing and coffee spilling. The phone also uses scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass so you don’t have to worry about scratches on the screen.
The Maxx boasts a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display with 960 x 540 pixel resolutions. The screen is bright and colourful and is also readable outdoors. The large screen makes it easier to read web pages, Facebook feeds and emails on the go.
The phone comes with an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash, which is also capable of shooting 1080p video. The camera and camcorder have good quality for a mobile phone.
Performance is impressive too, as the phone is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual core processor and it has 1 gigabytes of RAM or working memory. It also comes with an internal storage of 16 GB, expandable for a microSD card.
The test found that its menus were responsive and scrolling of pages was fast and smooth.
When the Razr Maxx was sent to me for a test, it ran on Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) operating system. While I was testing it, Motorola released Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) upgrade OS for it. I managed to upgrade the OS smoothly and without problems.
I tested the phone with True Move H’s 3G using its microSIM. I managed to download and install applications using the 3G connections fast. After I took pictures, I managed to upload them to Instagram and Facebook fast and smoothly. Checking mails and updating my Facebook status could be done quickly and without problem.
A feature that is very useful is the ability to fetch files and stream music and photos from your computer to the phone. First, you’ll need to install MotoCast for Windows on your computer. Then, you can set which folders will be accessible to Razr Maxx. When you leave home, leave your computer on and connected to Internet.
Then, you can use My Files and My Music applications on Razr Maxx to access folders and files on your computer. My Files will let you browse through folders to which you have provided access through MotoCast. You can download the files to the phone’s storage.
My Music will synchronise lists of music files stored on the folders, allowing you to play them on the phone online but doing away with the need to download them to the phone.
You can also use My Files application to upload pictures from the phone to a folder on your computer.
Razr Maxx also plays very good quality music. The provided in-ear headset renders music beautifully with clarity and deep bass.
The Motorola Razr Maxx is in shops now and is retailing for Bt17,900.
