Taiwanese teppanyaki spices up the Thai taste buds
Food Republic, Singapore's popular food court chain, has proved a smash hit with Bangkok's diners, with shoppers flocking to its large area on the second floor of Mega Bangna eager to sample the fare from one or more of the 25 stalls and mini restaurants lining the 1,000-seat space.
One option that shouldn't be missed for a quick meal at any time of day is Express Teppanyaki. Owned by Food Republic, this mini restaurant offers 30 set menus of Taiwanese-style, pan-fried seafood and meats created by master chef Chow Wen Long. The dishes will appeal to the Thai palate as more spices as used than in Japanese-style teppanyaki, giving the food an extra kick.
There are two choices of sauces- spicy and sour seafood and barbecue, which is made from black pepper and perfect for beef. Prices ranges from Bt119 to Bt290 with side dishes such as rice, fried egg, scrambled egg mixed with sliced spring onions, pan-fried vegetables and fried tofu in pepper sauce, going for Bt15 to Bt60.
"Taiwan style teppanyaki has a hot and spicy flavour, while Japanese cuisine focuses more on natural tastes," says Food Republic's manager Passakorn Maneeprasert. "Our aim is to offer healthy menus at reasonable prices. We focus on seafood, but also offer chicken, pork and beef."
All set menus include rice, pan-fried bean sprout and soup made from pumpkin or tomato. We select a seafood and meat combo set (Bt290) that comes with pan-fried sliced beef tenderloin, fish fillet, prawns and mussels in pepper sauce, along with a teppanyaki brown clamshell mushroom set (Bt119) and teppanyaki scallop set in spicy seafood sauce (Bt219). Other options include squid, salmon, sliced pork, mackerel and shrimp.
Express Teppanyaki also has a branch at Food Republic in Central Rama 9 too.
