Scale the heights to Scarlett

Even mountaineers will give a damn about the restaurant 37 stories up at the Pullman

Bangkokians have found with enormous relief that the best way to get over the numbing drear of their concrete existence is to literally get over it - hit one of those nice restaurants up in the sky.

Adding to the panorama of scenic views of the metropolis is the Scarlett Wine Bar & Restaurant, which emerged from the renovations at the Pullman Hotel G on Silom Road. The Scarlett is 37 floors up, which even by rising rooftop-dining standards is upright transcendental.

You might expect the place to be painted fiery red, but instead the ambience is warm rather than hot, relaxing in classy wood and steel, only an occasional ripple of red. The indoor area hosts the serious dining and gathering of big groups, while the terrace is suited to chilling and chatting over drinks - and gaping at the view.

It's one of the best. No place in Bangkok bustles quite like the neighbourhood from Silom to Charoenkrung roads and over to the Chao Phraya River. The vista is hypnotising by day, enthralling at night and absolutely breathtaking at sunset.

The chef, trailing a pair of Michelins stars in his credits, does an extensive menu of fine European dishes, and the variety of drinks is vast to match. There are more than 150 wines, premium spirits and cocktails on offer at affordable prices.

That means Bt160 for a beer and Bt220 for a cocktail. Dedicated tipplers calculate, though, that at this altitude you should really go for one of the Bt360 house cocktails, like the sweet and subtle Daiquiri - rum, triple sec, lime juice and syrup - or the sweet and sour Violet Kamikaze with vodka, blue curacao, lime juice, red grenadine and syrup.

If you're still not high enough, get a Brandy Alexander, simple yet complex with creme de cacao and milk swirled in.

Scarlett has enough distractions that a live band would be superfluous, but deep house and lounge tunes are playing all the time, and every Friday and Saturday night courtesy of a DJ.
