Nars goes pop in Thailand

With his new Andy Warhol Holiday Collection, you can shine like Edie Sedgwick and dazzle like Candy Darling

World renowned makeup artist Francois Nars, founder and creative director of the cosmetics brand that bears his name, was in Thailand recently to celebrate the launch of Nars' new "Andy Warhol Holiday Collection".

As this was his first visit to Land of Smiles, Nars spent a few days in the country searching for inspiration and also made time to greet his fans at Nars' cosmetic counter at Siam Paragon.

For the launch event, the Ballroom of the Sofitel So Bangkok was transformed into the Silver Factory Studios and decorated to conjure up Warhol's virtual world.

Thailand's top makeup artists turned out in their droves, among them Apichart Norasetthaporn, Sorawut Chattakul Na Ayudhya, Vanich Dajtharadon, Sira Kulsetsiri, Supree Achirakul, Tivakorn Sopa-Asawaporn, Tosapon Sanawong, and Sukon Srimarattanakul. Others eager to celebrate the wonderful colour of Nars' special collection included celebrities Arak Amornsukpasiri, Sukulwat Kanarot, Ratchawin Wongviriya, Chris Horwang, Paula Taylor and Lalita Sasiprapa.

Born in the South of France, Nars has enjoyed many successful years in the Big Apple. In 1994, he developed and successfully launched a small collection of 12 lipsticks at Barneys New York and thus was born his best-selling brand.

Unsurprisingly, Nars has long been inspired by Warhol. Designed in partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation, his latest collection is a modern day take on what the pop-art legend would do today, as seen through the eyes of Francois Nars with the creative director personally selecting all of the artwork and quotes used throughout the collection.

The collection of looks draws on characters well known in the world of Warhol, such as Edie Sedgwick, the actress with the big, beautiful eyes, as well as glamorous young blonde Candy Daring. Nars also captures Warhol's Silver Factory with a dynamic gift set that distils the essence of the glamorous rebels and downtown divas with a metallic silver logo trim and a Warhol quote painted on the inside of the glass, and which comes complete with a silver cosmetic bag. All the palettes and gift sets include mini "How to" face charts that show how to wear the colours, and leaflet inserts that explain the Nars and Warhol partnership.

Tosapon, one of Thailand's best-known makeup artists, says he has already worked with the latest collection and absolutely loves it. "Both the lipsticks and eye shadows are incredibly cool, especially the pop colours, while the eyeliner is really long-lasting," he says. "I think every makeup artist has Francois Nars' book "Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself". It's a must have. In the past, before Nars cosmetics became available in Bangkok, I remember how we used to ask friends who went abroad to buy the makeup for us."

"We love Nars' artistic concept," agrees Tivakorn. "The brand's cosmetics create beautiful looks both for the catwalk and the street. Every woman will enjoy the colours." Vanich adds that Nars not only has a unique style, but "guts" too. "His green is really a true green. The colour you see on the cosmetic palette transfers to the same colour on the eyelids. I like his idea of always creating new colours for the beauty industry."

Actress Chris reckons that once a woman uses Nars makeup, she is addicted to the brand.

For Warhol, the Silver Factory characters were like a full spectrum, with personalities as strong as colours. Like his idol, Francois Nars doesn't believe in blank beauty - he too needs character and personality.
