The fashion wizard's laboratory produces a line of cosmetics to match his outfits
Thanks to his distinct style, Marc Jacobs was already internationally acclaimed as a clothing designer when he launched the “Marc Jacobs Beauty” line of makeup last August. It includes more than 120 products and for a while was available only at Sephora stores and a few Marc Jacobs outlets. Now Sephora Thailand has brought it to Siam Center.
Country manager Narumol Patrathiranond recently unveiled the line alongside Jacobs’ spring clothing collection, with Aline Camargo, his firm’s beauty manager, and Tiana Luckett, his beauty education specialist, visiting from the US for the occasion.
Also on hand were celebrities Kristina Sethaputra, Pimpayap Srikarnchana, Nakwan Rayananonda, Siranuch Rojanasthien, Wantita Lewchalermwongse, Chanuntida Chandrubeksa, Soontharee Balek, Jarospan Svasti Na Ayudhya, Chatchada Kongtoranin and Kanchanita Kolasastraseni.
In a hall decked out in black and white, tables had Marc Jacobs Beauty items on display – dazzling foundations, concealers, brush-ons, eye shadow, eyeliners, mascara, lipsticks, lip gloss, nail lacquers and much more – ready for the guests to try.
Camargo explained that the transition from fashion to makeup was natural for Jacobs because he views everything as fashion and realises that makeup is an essential accessory for women, just like purses and shoes. “So Marc used his talents and ideas to create a makeup brand inspired by his black, glossy coffee table at home, which now portrayed on the sleek packaging of Marc Jacobs Beauty products.”
Beauty here becomes a “philosophy” and the intent is to inspire women to push the boundaries and create their own style, highlighting their own individual charms. Jacobs has always broken the rules when it comes to clothing and wants to foster the same creativity in makeup.
“I think colour is a personal thing,” he has said. “I like the idea of an unexpected colour. I wanted a black that was the blackest black. I wanted a shine that was the shiniest shine.”
The Beauty line encourages women to take liberties with provocative shades and textures. There are 16 complexion and colour cosmetics and four luxurious makeup brushes. Genius Gel Super-charged Foundation, for example, features top-grade gel performance thanks to “buoyancy gel technology”. The anti-ageing foundation protects and hydrates skin with coconut-water extract.
Lovemarc Lip Gel is a highly pigmented gel lipstick with a sleek, hydrating shine. The firm describes it as a “habit-forming formula that gently plumps with unique 3D optical volumisers” and, like the Genius Gel, it’s available in 16 shades, “each inspired by Marc’s favourite movies”.
“I see beauty in many things and I am attracted to all sorts of imperfection, to style, to confidence or experimentation. It’s unexpected and surprises you,” Jacobs says.
“I think the idea of transforming into this person you want to be is a lot of fun. It’s this idea of a young woman enjoying creating her look, getting ready for her night out or her night after her night out.”
