New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band return for another date

After performing for His Majesty the King at Siriraj Hospital on November 6 as an early celebration of his December 5 birthday, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans returns to Bangkok for free concerts featuring the King's compositions this weekend.

Hosted by Central Chidlom, the seven-member band will perform "Saeng Tien" ("The Candle Light Blues"), "Chata Chevit" ("HM Blues"), and more at a by-invitation-only concert presided over by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn at Morakot Outdoor Park at 7pm on Friday. Young singer Kam the Star will perform with the band on Friday and Thanis Sriklindee will be the guest on Saturday.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a collective of Dixieland and traditional jazz musicians who play at the celebrated Preservation Hall in New Orleans.

Founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe, the band has travelled the world, from New York's Carnegie Hall to London's Royal Court Theatre, on a mission to nurture and perpetuate the tradition of New Orleans' jazz.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band's music embodies a joyful and timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director, Ben Jaffe, the son of the founders, Preservation Hall has delved deep into New Orleans' musical heritage to bring authentic sounds of early jazz to modern-day audiences through its work as both a band and on its record label.

Preservation Hall is a familiar name to Thai jazz fans, having performed many times here. The band made its Thai debut 24 years ago in 1988 with a tribute concert for the King's 60th birthday. The band was also invited to play a private session with His Majesty at Chitralada Palace.

In 2007, Preservation Hall was back again to celebrate His Majesty's 80th birthday, and its members took the opportunity to present him with the most prestigious token of appreciation a jazz ensemble could offer - the role of honorary bandleader.

Three weeks ago, on November 6, His Majesty accompanied by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, granted an audience to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band at Siriraj Hospital pier. The concert featured tunes composed by the King during his visit to New Orleans, with the Princess playing vibraphone and Asst Prof Pathorn Srikaranonda sitting in on saxophone.

The record cover for the original recording of the compositions was graced with an image of His Majesty's zodiac sign, painted by the Princess.
