Getting wild with Firewind
The Greek heavy metal band jet into Bangkok to help Overdrive magazine celebrate its birthday
Gus G, the successor to long time Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde and the founder of Firewind, wowed Thai metal heads last Sunday night with his debut concert at Bangkok Convention Hall of Central Lat Phrao.
The Greek fret virtuoso, who won Best Shredder Award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods 2011, played an energetic and fast power metal set with fellow Firewind members, guitarist and keyboardist Bob Katsionis, singer Apollo Papathanasio, bassist Petros Christo and drummer Johan Nunez.
The band played a list of songs from "Few Against Many", released earlier this year, including "Wall of Sound", "Losing My Mind", "Glorious" and the title track of 2002's "Between Heaven And Hell".
On "Destination Forever". Papathanasio demonstrated his true vocal power before asking the audience to join him in the introduction to "Mercenary Man".
Gus G got big screams from Thai metal heads while rendering his speedy and dynamic guitar works especially on "SKG".
Other interesting tracks were "World on Fire", "Into The Fire", "Angels Forgive Me", "Till The End of Time", and "I Am The Anger".
The concert marked the fourteenth anniversary of Overdrive Day 4 and was organised by guitar magazine Overdrive along with a show by four Overdrive-winning guitarists and a guitar talk by guitar great Olarn Phromjai, Chatree "Ohm" Kongsuwan, Chakrarin "Pop" Duangmaneeratanachai and Prart Arunrangsi, who's also the magazine's editor, pianist Jakrawal "Nueng" Saothongyuthitham, drummer Suthipong Pankhong and bassist Ajarn Kob.
