Canon's MG3170 wireless printer awaits orders from your smartphone, even filling both sides of a sheet

PIXMA MG3170 is a compact, stylish and affordable multifunction inkjet printer that supports wireless networking, allowing you to print your snapshots from your iPhone or an Android smartphone easily.

Targeting young users who enjoy taking snapshots with their smartphone, the MG3170 comes in three choices of metallic colours – wine red, white and black. And Canon Thailand sells the printer with the same specifications but different colours at different prices.

Users who want to save can choose the black one for only Bt2,990. Those who want the red one because it matches their furniture will have to pay Bt3,190, while users who have a white smartphone or whitetheme Mac computer or notebooks will want the gorgeous white one for Bt3,390.

The MG3170 sports printing resolution of 4800 x 1200 dots and has 1,792 printing nozzles, while its ink droplet size is only 2pl.

Its scanner function sports optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi. It has an energy saving function, which will automatically shut the machine down after a certain period of idling and start it up when it receives a print order.

MG3170 can be installed for printing via a USB cable connection easily but the fun part is to print to it wirelessly.

MG3170 supports WiFi IEE802.11 n/g/b wireless networking protocol and is not difficult to connect to your home WiFi router but your router needs to have a “puttosync” button for synchronising connection with the printer.

To connect it to your home WiFi router for the first time, which you have to do only once, you must use a companion CD to install the driver by choosing the wireless printing option.

Then, the installation software will guide you to press certain buttons on the printer control panel until it is ready to sync with your router. Finally, you will be prompted to press the sync button of the router and when the printer’s LED turns blue, it means it has already been connected to your WiFi home network.

If you want to print wirelessly from another desktop computer or a notebook computer that is connected to your router, you will simply have to choose the same wireless printing option but you skip the process of connecting the printer to the router and just install the driver and printing software for the MG3170.

To print from your Android smartphone or iPhone, you need to download and install Canon’s EasyPhotoPrint app.

The app lets you scan for the MG3170 that has been connected to your home WiFi router, then you can select photos to print.

You can even select type of paper and size of print and whether the printing will be borderless or not. You can also wirelessly scan and save images from the MG3170 to your smartphone.

Another nice feature of the MG3170 is its auto duplex printing technology that allows it to print on both sides of the paper automatically, which is very convenient. During the test, it printed the oddnumber page first and drew the paper back and then printed the following even number page.

The MG3170 also comes with Fast Front technology that allows you to replace ink cartridges and load paper from the front easily.

The printer package comes with an EasyPhotoPrint EX application that can add more fun features. You can add five special effects to photos: FishEye, Miniature, Toy, Soft Focus and Blur Background.

The test found that the MG3170 had good quality and fast printing speed. Photo printing on special photo paper from Canon, Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, yielded photolike quality like those you ordered prints from a photo shop. Text printing on plain paper yielded sharp and clean results.

The printing of 4x6 borderless photo glossy paper took about 40 seconds while printing of A4size text on a plain paper took about 8 seconds. It took about one minute for duplex printing of an A4size text printing. And it took about 1:49 minutes for A4 photo printing on the glossy photo paper. The printing time was measured when the printer had received the print data and started printing.
