China's new slim touch-screen phone combines attractive design with great performance

A sleek and slim touch-screen smart phone with good performance, the Ascend P1 is the latest release from Huawei Technologies, China's largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment.

The P1 is only 7.7mm thick and weighs only 110 grammes. It features an 8 megapixel camera and it is powered by a fast 1.5GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU. It runs on Google Android 4.0.3 operating system.

It is equipped with 1 gigabyte of RAM or active memory and has 4 GB internal storage, expandable to 36 GB with a 32 GB microSD card.

It has very good 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen with 540x960 pixel resolution, which is colourful and readable outdoors.

I was happy to discover that the P1 supports all 3G operators in Thailand. I tested it on TrueMove H's HSPA+ 850MHz network and was impressed by the P1's performance.

I could take photos and upload them to my Facebook and Instagram networks quickly and had no problem in updating my Foursquare and Facebok status. Checking mails was fast and smooth. Downloading and installing of several Android applications was also more than satisfactory.

The phone's menus were responsive and sliding and scrolling the screens was fast.

The P1's camera took impressively sharp and clean photos. The camera software is good with several settings for you to tweak to have fun. Select the scene mode for auto or opt for one of your own from several options, like Action, Landscape, Portrait, Night Portrait, and Fireworks.

You can also select several fun filters, such as Antique, Lomo Cold, Lomo Warm, Sepia, Aqua and Sketch Grey. There are also fun face twisting filters, including Big face, Big nose, Gobbler, Insect, Professor and Wide smile.

The P1 played very good quality music as well with clarity and solid bass when I tried it with my premium Sony EX-1000.

And the phone's Music player uses Dolby Mobile 3.0 Plus technology to enhance the sound with several choices of equalizer settings.

The provided stereo headset was good enough for enjoying the music.

Huawei Ascend P1 retails for Bt14,990.
