The yearly harvest

Dan, Beam and Boyd reap the biggest Seed awards with two prizes apiece

They’ve been one person short since the tragic death of Apichet “Big” Kittikorncharoen, but RS Public’s Dan-Beam, formerly known as D2B, are still as popular as ever, picking up two prizes at the Seed Awards 2006 held last Wednesday at Bec-Tero Hall.
The young men, who won the Duo and Group Artist and Popular Artist for their album “Relax” were visibly moved by the accolades.
“The past year has been very good for both of us. These awards will drive us to work even harder on our next albums,” said Beam.
“We would like to thank everybody, especially those who voted for us. You’ve made us very happy tonight,” added Dan.
Distinguished lyricist Boyd Kosiyabong was also recognised, taking awards for Album of the Year and Producer of the Year for his “Rhythm & Boyd Eleven”.
Boyd wasn’t present at the ceremony but was represented by the group of singers who appear on the album.
The awards bash was larger than last year’s, kicking off at 7pm with the arrival of the artists, who sauntered slowly down the red carpet, waving and smiling at the legions of delighted fans.
Once everyone was seated, Hoy and Look Pad delivered a duet of the award presentation theme song. Hoy then claimed the microphone for an amusing cover of Bi the Star’s “I Need Somebody”.
At 8.15pm, Hoy announced the winner of Indy Artist of the Year. Polite applause greeted the little known band Good September as they climbed the 20 steps leading to the stage.
“Thank you so much. It is our greatest reward since we began playing music and a validation of our efforts,” said a beaming band member.
Lao Lom won New Artist of the Year, Shayne Ward took Popular International Artist of the Year, while director Songyos Sukmakanan received the Music Video of the Year prize for his work on Palmy’s “Khwam Jeb Puad”.
Rock Artist of the Year went to Big Ass and Rock Album of the Year to Clash for their album “Crashing”. Both bands had been nominated for five awards apiece.
“Thank you to our fans and the Seed team. It is our first award this year,” said Big Ass’ lead singer.
“We were really worried that our fans didn’t like our new album. This award reassures us that they do, so thank you,” butted in another band member to the sounds of screams from the audience.
Clash, who are currently on tour, were represented by a spokesman in Singapore.
Seed 97.5’s managing director Teerapat Sajjanon handed out two awards – Popular Asian Artist of the Year to Dong Bang Shin Gi, who were unable to make it to the awards, and New Asian Pop of the Year to Super Junior, who flew in for the ceremony.
“New Asian Pop of the Year is an award reserved for an artist or artists who are in line with today’s music trends. Korean music meets that criterion,” Teerapat explained.
“We have also received a New Artist award back home and are very grateful to Seed. We will always keep this moment in our memories,” said one of the 12 members of the Korean boy band, his voice almost drowned out by the screams.
Bi the Star won Popular Song of the Year, Punch took home the prize for Female Artist of the Year, Thongchai “Bird” McIntyre was named Male Artist of the Year, and Slot Machine won Song of the Year.
“Award presentation ceremonies give me a wonderful feeling of warmth. Thank you so much,” Bird said with a big grin. “I would like to share this award with all the artists here tonight and encourage them to work even harder.”
