The Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to finish above the 10,000 overnight, after a four-day losing streak. The Dow index gained 19.61, or 0.2 percent, to close at 10,060.06.
New-home sales dropped 12.4 percent to a 276,000 annual rate in July after a 12.1-percent increase in June.
Crude oil rose to USD 72.52 a barrel after a report showed a 4.1-million barrel jump in crude supplies, more than double of what was expected.
Gold rose to an eight-week high, settling at USD 1,239.50 an ounce as the U.S. dollar fell against the euro and economic concerns boosted investment in gold.
