EC claims red-shirt threat to members' homes

Police have been asked to safeguard the premises of the Election Commission (EC) chairman and four EC members after the red shirts threatened an arson attack on their houses, Election Commission secretary-general Suthipol Thaweechaikarn said on Thursday.

Suthipol expressed concern that the red shirt movement had misunderstood legal procedures the EC must comply with in regard to the investigation into payments to the Democrat Party. The party has been accused of illegally receiving a Bt258 million donation from TPI Polene.

The red shirts on Wednesday demonstrated outside the EC office, accusing the office of double standards by refusing to vote on seeking a court order to dissolve the Democrat Party after eight months of investigation. The court, however, had voted earlier to disband the People Power Party.

"Everyone feels uneasy about the misunderstanding. I believe the EC handled the case according to evidence and fact and without favouritism,'' Suthipol said.
