Friday night is salsa night at Senor Pico
It's salsa time! The Bangkok Mexican restaurant Senor Pico is now hosting a salsa party every Friday, from early evening until late.
Festive and fun, Senor Pico has been a favourite venue for Mexican food and live Latin music for almost two decades. Now every Friday, adding to the menu of such specialities as fajitas, enchiladas, carnitas and espetadas, is the salsa fest where you can show off your steps or learn how to do the sexy moves.
From 8.30pm, or a bit later depending on how late the patrons finish their main courses, the Cuban quartet Fascinacíon will speed up beats and crank up the volume to lure everyone to the dance floor and move their bodies.
From their 13 years of entertaining guests in Mexican restaurants around the world, they know how to work the floor with a repertoire filled with insatiable Latin grooves like merengue, salsa, cumbia, bachata, traditional Mexican music, cha-cha-cha, bolero, rumba, mambo and even a little Arabic.
Then comes Beisy Quintana Matos - queen of the dance floor. She'll be making some fascinating salsa moves and asking you to join in. Don't be shy! If you're new to the dance, she's more than willing to help you through the "baby steps".
Hailing from Havana, she holds a degree in sociology. She is also a professional budaka - martial artist - and practised karate for more than 10 years. She was even a member of Cuba's national karate team and a national champion. She participated in the 1999 Pan American Games, winning first place.
"For Cubans, salsa is something that they have in their blood. In Cuba everybody learns how to dance salsa when they are kids. Nobody takes salsa lessons; in Cuba we are born with it," she says. She started giving salsa lessons in Bangkok after a couple of friends saw her moves and asked her to attend their parties to teach them. The word spread, and soon so many people were asking for lessons that she decided to start teaching in schools and at parties in Bangkok.
If the tantalising Latin music still couldn't get you off the seat, get one (or more) of those delicious margaritas. You can stick to the original recipe or be a little adventurous with fruity flavoured ones like strawberry, mango and guava.
