Travel Mart draws buyers

Some 400 buyers and trade visitors from 49 countries have confirmed their participation in the Thailand Travel Mart Plus Greater Mekong Subregion from September 8-10 in Bangkok.

The event, which was rescheduled from June due to the domestic political instability, aims to help attract new emerging markets.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Suraphon Svetsreni said yesterday that 335 buyers and 60-65 trade visitors would come from many countries across the world.

Also expected to attend the three-day event are 50 business visitors and 98 media and travel writers from all over the world.

Booths will be set up by 388 businesses from Thailand and neighbouring countries - Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China.

Last year's event saw 405 sellers and 407 buyers from around the world.

This month would be a good time to advise foreign operators and media about the tourism situation here now that everything is returning to normal, Suraphon said.

"Some advertising and campaigns are set to launch at the event including 'Amazing Thailand, Always Amaze You'," he said.

TAT will introduce to the delegates the country's latest tourism products and services such as Bangkok's Airport Rail Link and subway.

Many operators from emerging countries such Bulgaria, Brazil, Lithuania, Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Kazakhstan and Estonia would join the event so TAT hopes these countries would help boost tourism in the coming year, he said.

According to TAT statistics, international arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport last month increased 6.8 per cent from same month last year to 845,212. Phuket International Airport from August 1-22 welcomed 93,367 visitors, up 38.6 per cent on year.

Sansern Ngao-rangsri, TAT's deputy governor for Asia, Oceania and the South Pacific, said TAT had invited operators and media from Japan this week to visit and learn about Thailand's tourism products and services.

"Japan is one key market for Thailand so the agency is approaching the Japanese to return to Thailand," he said.
