Chiang Mai night zoo saves on energy

Chiang Mai Night Safari has vowed to use natural energy to help tackle global warming, announcing yesterday its target to reduce its montly power bill by Bt100,000.

The zoo's Special Area manager, Saravuth Srisakun, yesterday unveiled two solar-powered golf carts to be used in the 2km Jaguar Trail. The golf carts, each equipped with 240-watt 36-volt solar panels, can run for seven hours a day and one hour parking in the sun gives each the power to run about 2.5-4.5km.

The zoo is also considering LED bulbs and renewable energy technologies. It currently pays about Bt300,000 a month for electricity. It hopes the measures will cut its bills by a third.
