Basic education may seek extra allocation

The Basic Education Commission may have to seek an extra budget to replace some of the more than 12,000 government teachers and school staff who are qualified for this year's early retirement scheme, secretary-general Chinaphat Phoomirat said yesterday.

Out of a total of 12,867 positions available, 12,117 qualified for the ER package offered by the commission under a Bt571 million budget for severance pay. There are also 750 positions available for ER with Bt112-million available for severance pay.

Chinaphat said the Bt112 million might not be enough if there were new applicants for the 750 positions and qualified for the ER, because the Bt112 million could not be paid out to compensate their retirement, as their positions needed to be filled by temporary or permanent teachers and personnel.
