Regional clean energy conference

Thailand will host a major cleanenergy conference next month, when local and foreign experts will share their views on how industry can adopt green technology to reduce energy consumption as well as show their concern for the environment.

Renewable Energy Asia 2010 is designed to demonstrate Thailand's highlighting of renewable energy and energy efficiency against the backdrop of global warming and rising energy prices.

The two-day event will be cohosted at Bitec Bang Na by UBM Asia (Thailand), the Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment, the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), Kasikorn Securities and PTT.

Energy Minister Wannarat Charnnukul will be the keynote speaker, followed by a discussion on Southeast Asia's potential by the International Energy Agency, the United Nations Development Programme and Thailand's Office of Natural Resources and Environment Policy and Planning.

Besides an exhibition of clean energy technologies, a onestop clinic will provide free consulting on clean technology and energy efficiency by officials from private and public organisations.

Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's energy committee, noted that besides business matching, this was a forum where businesses could find ideas to reduce energy consumption, as ener¬gy now contributes considerably to operating costs.

"For competitiveness in domestic and international markets as well as to address rising energy prices, all businesses should pay more attention to energy efficiency. One of the solutions is we must promote renewable energy and choose new options," he said.

As part of the fair, the Thai Chamber of Commerce will host a CEO Energy Forum, where executives of key companies such as Siam Cement Group, PTT Chemical and Charoen Pokphand Group will brainstorm on energy efficiency in major industries - plastic, cold storage, ceramics, hospitals, hotels and transport. They are also preparing a proposal for the government to promote energy conservation.

"The fair will introduce innovative ways for small and large organisations in energy management to reduce operating cost and address the critical globalwarming issue," Sanan said.
