New craft for national carrier

Thai Airways International has ordered seven Airbus A330-300 aircraft for its routes in the Asia-Pacific region. The aircraft will be delivered starting at the end of 2011.

The deal was finalised recently at the Farnborough Air Show in the UK.

"Thai Airways has selected the A330-300 to meet our medium haul requirements," notes Captain Montree Jumrieng, managing director of THAI. "This will lead to improved efficiency as well as reducing the average age of our fleet."

The modern and efficient A330 is one of the most widely used widebodied aircraft. The national carrier already operates 20 A330-300.

Tourism up despite turmoil

Thailand's tourism industry enjoyed an increase in the number of international visitors during the first half of the year, although there was a sharp decline in arrivals during the political unrest in May and also in June.

The arrival of foreign visitors increased 13.7 per cent compared with last year's record, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sport.

From January to June, about 7.5 million foreign travellers visited Thailand, of which 3.6 million were from East Asian countries.

Thailand expects 14.5 million foreign travellers this year.
