Governance panels set up to monitor provinces

The government has set up good governance committees in all provinces as an additional mechanism to prevent negligence and corruption by local officials.

PM's Office Minister Satit Wongnongtaey said yesterday during a press conference to launch the panels that 1,149 people would work on the committees around the country.

They will be responsible for monitoring public officials in their areas of jurisdiction and would report to provincial governors or heads of relevant local state agencies about cases of negligence and irregularities.

If no action was taken, the heads of provincial governance panels could report cases directly to the PM's Office or relevant government ministers, Satit said.

Committees will be chaired by PM's Office Inspector Generals and consist of representatives from civil society, local councils, and business.

They will begin their duty to closely monitor whether the provinces transparently spend Bt8 billion of government funds, according to Permanent Secretary of the PM's Office Jaturong Panyadilok.

"If we find anything unusual or corrupt in the spending we will inform the anti-corruption agencies," Jaturong said.

"This mechanism will help the government operate things cautiously. It's not too harsh but we want to enhance good governance."
