Korn upbeat on SMS case

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij on Thursday voiced optimism that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and he would be able to clear charges related the sending of short messages via mobile phone services to the people last year.

The National Anti Corruption Commission has this morning convened a meeting to debate the case. It is scheduled to announce its decision in tomorrow's morning.

"As I understand, the NACC is to decide whether to continue its investigation and not to rule on the cause to suspect guilt as speculated," Korn said, dismissing news reports that his fate and that of the prime minister's would hinge on tomorrow's NACC ruling.

He said he was ready to give additional statement or evidence if required by the NACC.

Under the anti-graft law, Korn and Abhisit would have to suspend their duties if the NACC decides on the sufficient cause to suspect their guilt, paving way for the impeachment proceedings.

Korn and Abhisit are being investigated for abusing office to send out SMS.

In his defence, Korn said the SMS was meant for the public interest and that there was no personal gains nor the conflict of interest.
