NHRC hears testimonies

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) yesterday summoned the Pheu Thai Party and the government's Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) to clarify the party's allegation that a large number of red-shirted protesters had been detained beyond a legal deadline in an Army barracks in Kanchanaburi.

The testimonies were given in separate closed-door sessions by the opposition party, which was represented by spokesman Prompong Nopparit and provincial MP Ma Pho-ngarm, and the CRES and the barracks, which were represented by senior soldiers.

The CRES later announced that it was considering legal action against Prompong's allegation of illegal detention of about 300 red shirts, saying that the statement was baseless and lacked verification.

Meanwhile, forensic scientist Pornthip Rojjanasunant said RDX chemical residue found in the home of Warisriya Bunsom was purely a harmful explosive. There has not yet been verification that the RDX found at the suspect's home was the same type used in a bomb attack on the Bhum Jai Thai Party last month.
