Media, agents tours to revive tourism

About 500 foreign travel agents and journalists are presently in the country to help promote Thailand's ailing tourism sector after the recent political crisis.

Meanwhile, 800 local entrepreneurs are planning to host a grand sale event at the end of this month in a bid to woo tourists.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Thai Airways International brought the group of foreigners into the country to promote tourism in the short term, over the next six months.

Of the guests, 353 are from East Asia, South Asia and the South Pacific region, 115 are from Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Chumpol Silapa-archa said the country faces many challenges, but the ministry is confident the fundamental strength of the country, the economy and the Thai people should help lead to greater achievements.

He urged travel agents to include Thailand in their marketing plans and called on the media to spread the message that Thailand has returned to normal and there are no worries about political issues.

The group arrived in Bangkok on Monday and will visit key tourist attractions in the North, Northeast and East until Friday.

TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said TAT and Thai Airways International were both founded in 1960, and 2010 marked their 50th anniversary.

"We want to show the world that our country has returned to normal and is safe for visitors," he said.

To attract international tourists, 800 local entrepreneurs plan to join the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Fair, to be held at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre from July 29 to August 1.

Operators will be offering their tourism products and services at up to 80 per cent discount.

The highlight at the event will be products priced as low as Bt199.

The event is expected to generate revenue of Bt1.8 billion.

Since June 15, TAT has started the Amazing Thailand Grand Sales across the country. About 8,000 operators have joined the event with special offers of 10-80 per cent discount.
